EXCERPT FROM THE INTRODUCTION

“Man has always attempted to evade the forces of nature and the destruction they cause.
Industrialization and the rapid advance in technology have led to new threats and tremendous
increase in their potential to cause damage. As a result, man has developed strategies to
overcome or minimize the impact caused by disasters. Man's efforts have been channeled
toward planning for disaster recovery.

“To plan, it is essential to understand the underlying needs and concepts. To this effect,
Disaster Recovery Planning begins by answering the question, "Why must I plan for disaster
recovery?" Besides detailing the planning considerations and the organizational structure
required to plan, this book distinguishes among various disasters and their consequences.
You can find detailed information on risk analysis that can be used to prevent and control
risks. The important concepts in avoiding and handling disasters, such as access control,
anti-viruses, and firewalls are covered. With the required input for planning, the book guides
you through the rigorous cycle of creating a disaster recovery plan. It also presents valuable
information that is related to testing and maintaining the plan. Finally, the book details the
strategies for the recovery of centralized and decentralized systems. Here, you learn about
systems recovery, network and communication links recovery, and data recovery. In the end,
you review a case study to trace the steps involved in an organization's recovery.
